5 Reasons Living at Home May do More Harm than Good

senior_home_alone-LR.jpgLiving at home for as long as possible is a goal most seniors have. They want to maintain as much independence as possible, and most people have emotional attachments to their home. However, there can be health concerns that arise from living at home. Knowing what areas your loved one may struggle with can help you provide them with extra support and, where necessary, help them take steps to move somewhere with support to live a happy, healthy life.

Falls- Traditional homes may not have the structural components necessary for a senior to live safely. They may have stairs that become increasingly difficult to manage, slippery walkways, and showers and bathrooms that make seniors prone to falls.

Healthy Meals- Cooking, especially healthy cooking, can become a challenge for seniors. They may struggle to cook a well-rounded meal or make it to the grocery store to buy fresh ingredients. Failing eyesight or memory problems may make the potential for accidents while cooking more likely.

Strain of Maintaining a Home- Maintaining a well-kept home can be challenging for young, energetic people. For seniors struggling with health issues, less energy, or other problems, it is often nearly impossible to keep up with housework, leading to an unsafe or unsanitary home environment.

Medications- Eyesight and memory problems can be especially hazardous when it comes to managing medication. Remembering to take the right dose of a medication at the right time, with or without food, may be challenging for seniors.

Depression and Isolation- Loneliness is a challenge many seniors face, which puts them at risk for depression. Depression itself can lead to a host of other problems, such as heart disease or increased risk of suicide.
